Visit Port Royal Jamaica And Join Our Port Royal Tour

Let our Port Royal tour take you back in time to a part of Jamaica’s history. Once known as “the richest and wickedest city in the world,” Port Royal was originally used as a fishing camp by the Tainos, who were the natives of Jamaica. When the British invaded the island, in 1655, they quickly realized the strategic position of Port Royal, and began fortifying it.

It effectively became the virtual capital of Jamaica during the 17th century, as pirates and buccaneers brought in much of their bounty here after successful raids, including Henry Morgan, who was eventually knighted and made Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.

After being destroyed by an earthquake in 1692, a large portion of the city sank into the sea. Today, Port Royal has become a quiet fishing village and one of Jamaica’s most important archaeological sites. Some of the buildings are still intact today and now stand as some of the most important attractions in Port Royal Jamaica.

This tour will take you to the most famous landmarks in Port Royal that are still standing today, so that you can learn about the history of what was once the most popular city in the world.

Highlights Of Our Port Royal Tour

You will stop at several of the most famous landmarks in Port Royal. These include:

St. Peter’s Church

Visit this historic church that has been rebuilt 3 times, after being destroyed by the earthquake in 1692, then a fire in 1703, and finally rebuilt in 1726.

Fort Charles

This is the oldest fort in Jamaica, being built in 1656. This fort served to guard the entrance of Kingston Harbour, and it was the only fort that survived the earthquake in 1692.

Giddy House

Built in 1888 as the Royal Artillery Store for the Victoria Battery, this building came to be in its lopsided position after it was shifted to a 45 degree angle by an earthquake in 1907. The positioning of the building gives persons who enter it a sense of lack of balance, thus making them “giddy”.

Historic Naval Hospital

Built by the labour of African slaves in 1818, this was one of the earliest buildings to use cast iron in its construction. The facilities here included staff quarters, mortuary, kitchens, store room and an isolation ward. The building has been used for many different purposes over the years.

Old Gaol House

Once a women’s jail, this historical structure pre-dates the earthquake in 1692, and it has survived countless disasters, including 14 hurricanes and 2 fires. It has been fully restored and is well maintained.

Naval Cemetery

The graveyard where the sailors of old are buried underneath shady palms is marked by an anchor at the entrance. This was also the final resting place of Sir Henry Morgan, until it sunk beneath the sea in 1692.
