Mental illness is a serious disorder, especially in Jamaica, where it is often undermined and underestimated. Many Jamaicans simply do not have the necessary education about mental illnesses, so when they witness persons suffering from it, their first thought is that the person is just misbehaving or acting out. By joining our mental health volunteer abroad programs you can help break the stigma.


Volunteers are needed to help sustain Jamaica’s weak and underfunded mental health facilities, such as clinics, hospitals and private practices. Jamaica International Projects has partnered with several of these health facilities in Jamaica by creating counseling volunteer opportunities to help local doctors, psychiatrists, counsellors and nurses to perform their day to day duties.


Some activities that our psychology volunteers will engage in are assisting in diagnosing mental patients, administering medication, providing counselling for youth and teens and much more. These projects are perfect for psychology students and persons working in the medical field, however we welcome all volunteers, no matter how limited your experience is.

How You Can Help On Our Psychology & Counselling Volunteer Opportunities:

  • *Observe patients who suffer from mental illness
  • *Assist the psychologist/counsellor in performing duties such as counselling and evaluations
  • *Perform administrative tasks such as entering patient’s data into the system, answering the telephone, scheduling appointments and more
  • *Help to distribute medicine to patients

Project Details

Mental Health Volunteer Opportunities Abroad Project Placements

You will be placed at either a mental health hospital, clinic or at a private counselling practice in either Kingston, Saint Catherine, Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.


Amount Of Participants:

We can accommodate as many as 30 volunteers at once, however if you have a larger group we will need to make special arrangements.



You do not need prior experience to join our mental health volunteering abroad projects, but volunteers who do posses experience in this field or psychology students may receive an advance placement where they can perform more complex activities.


Project Activities:

After you apply, our Program Advisor will contact you to discuss the activities that you would like to perform during your project. Planning is key, so we encourage you to plan ahead so that you can receive the experience you are seeking.



We encourage volunteers to try and collect any resources they can find back home to bring with them to Jamaica and offer them as donations to their project. We will provide you with a list of your project placement’s greatest needs. This is NOT a mandatory aspect of your program, so you can decline if you do not wish to do so.


Our fundraising guide was created to help volunteers by giving them excellent ideas to fundraise and offset the cost of their mental health volunteer overseas trip. We will also provide you with any documents that you may need to apply for grants and funding.

You may stay for 1 week or as long as 3 months on the clinical psychology volunteer abroad program. If you wish for a longer stay, we will need to check the visa requirements for your country.


Your First Day:

On the first day, you will be accompanied by the Program Advisor who will give you a tour of the property and introduce you to the local staff so that you can settle in. Afterwards he/she will see to it that you are clear as to your objectives and show you where to purchase lunch.



Each day you will be transferred to and from your project by our company drivers, who are courteous and punctual. They will pick you up each day based off times set in your itinerary, so if you wish to alter the time on any day please let us know in advance.


Project Completion:

When you have successfully completed your project, you will receive a Certificate of Participation signed by our General Manager, as well as any documents that you may request to prove your volunteer hours.

Counseling volunteer opportunities are available all year round from Mondays to Fridays. It may be possible to arrange projects on the weekends if you desire.


Project Dates and Times:

We ask that volunteers book their flights to arrive in Jamaica on the weekends, preferably Saturday so that your project can commence on a Monday and run to Friday each week. If it is not possible for you to arrive on weekend, we will still accommodate you.


Afternoon And Weekends:

We offer cultural immersion tours and fun adventures during weekends and some afternoons. This is to help volunteers inject fun and excitement into their volunteer program, while learning more about our people and culture. You can view our tour and attraction packages, and add them to your program to enhance your experience in Jamaica.

Accommodation and Transportation




Where You Will Stay:

You will stay with a pre-vetted local host in houses or apartments that are equipped to accommodate our volunteers and interns. You will get a chance to experience the Jamaican culture first hand. On your application form you will select the area you would like to stay in, and choose from St. Catherine, Kingston, Montego Bay, or St. Ann (Ocho Rios). All local hosts we work with are safe and will treat you like a member of the family.

Group Accommodations

Groups joining our mental health volunteering abroad programs will be able to choose from a wide list of guest houses or hotels that we work with or manage to accommodate your members. You can choose accommodations in the most popular areas of Jamaica, equipped with dorm rooms, double rooms and private rooms and modern day amenities.



We provide all of our volunteers with orientation on your date of arrival. Once you are settled into your accommodation, you will be given your finalized itinerary and your orientation guide. During orientation we will go over project dates and times, transportation, meal times, cultural/excursion activities and you will be given tips on Jamaica.


Key Deposit:

We require a $20 USD key deposit to be paid during orientation. This will be refunded upon checkout once the keys are returned. If you lose your keys we will use your deposit to cover their replacement.


Welcome Meal:

On your date of arrival, following your orientation, you will be served with your welcome meal.


Daily Meals:

Your Package Cost covers breakfast and dinner daily. You will be served Jamaican cuisine during your stay. Indicate if you have any special dietary requirements on your application so that we can make preparations for you.




Airport Pickup:

Your psychology and counseling volunteer opportunities Project Cost also covers the cost of airport pickup at the Norman Manley International Airport or Sangster International Airport, depending on where you will be staying. We will meet you at the airport with a sign saying Jamaica International Projects. You will be transferred directly from the airport to your accommodation.

You should book you flight to the airport that is nearest to the parish you will be staying in. We will advise you during application.


Daily Transfers:

Each day, you will be transferred from your accommodation directly to your project by a team member. We will also pick you up at your project at the agreed upon time and transfer you either back to the accommodation, to change money/purchase supplies or to a cultural activity/excursion, depending upon your itinerary.


Tour Transfers:

For your tours, you will have a Program Advisor accompanying you to point out important landmarks and to function as a guide. You will be transferred to and from all excursions and outings.


Return To Airport:

At the end of your project, we will provide return transportation to the airport or bus stop.

A Program Advisor will review your application and contact you within 48 hours via Skype, Google Hangouts or telephone. You will get a chance to discuss your goals, skills, fundraising and ask us any questions.


Secure Your Placement:

As soon as you are accepted, you will need to pay your Non-Refundable Processing Fee so that we can begin making your placement and processing your application. You may also pay a deposit or make payment in full once you are sure of your date of travel, because availability is on a first come first serve basis.


Submit Documentation:

After paying the processing fee you will be sent a list of documentation that you need to submit. We ask that you submit these documents as soon as possible, so if you are planning to join this program then you should start the process of obtaining them from now. These documents are:

• 2 Reference letters (1 personal, 1 professional)
• 1 recent photo id (passport, national id or driver's license
• 1 police report/criminal background check
• Proof of travel insurance (if you do not have insurance you can purchase it HERE)
• Flight itinerary


Finalize All Payments:

All payments must be finalized no later than 60 days before your travel date. This means that the entire package cost, including Processing Fee, Accommodation Package Cost and Cultural Immersion/Excursion cost must be settled 60 days before your arrival date. You can update your cultural immersion/excursion package or purchase additional tours while you are in Jamaica.


You will receive updates on your project and itinerary via emails, phone calls and through Google+ or Skype calls.
